Happy Birthday JOHN BONHAM R.I.P. (video)

John Henry Bonham (31 May 1948 – 25 September 1980) was an English musician and songwriter, best known as the drummer of Led Zeppelin. Bonham was esteemed for his speed, power, fast right foot, distinctive sound, and "feel" for the groove. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock music. Rolling Stone readers named him the "best drummer of all time" in 2011.

After the break-up of The Yardbirds, guitarist Jimmy Page was forming a new band when he recruited Robert Plant, who in turn suggested Bonham. Page's choices for drummer included Procol Harum's B.J. Wilson, and session drummers Clem Cattini and Aynsley Dunbar. Ginger Baker was also rumoured to be on Page's list. However, upon seeing Bonham drum for Tim Rose at a club in Hampstead, north London, in July 1968, Page and manager Peter Grant were instantly convinced that he was the perfect fit for the new project, first known as the New Yardbirds and later as Led Zeppelin.

During Led Zeppelin's first tour of the United States in December 1968, Bonham became friends with Vanilla Fudge's drummer Carmine Appice. Appice introduced him to Ludwig Drums, which he then used for the rest of his career. Bonham used the longest and heaviest sticks available, which he referred to as "trees." His hard hitting style was displayed to great effect on many Led Zeppelin songs, including "Immigrant Song" (Led Zeppelin III), "When the Levee Breaks" (Led Zeppelin IV / Zoso.svg), "Kashmir" (Physical Graffiti), "The Ocean" (Houses of the Holy), and "Achilles Last Stand" (Presence). In fact, Page once admitted to letting Bonham use a double bass drum in an early demo of "Communication Breakdown" but claimed he scratched the track because of Bonham's "over-use" of it. The double bass style of drumming---already influential by way of Cream drummer Ginger Baker---didn't regain popularity for another twenty years. The studio recording of "Misty Mountain Hop" perfectly captures his keen sense of dynamics, and this is similarly exhibited by his precise drumming on "No Quarter". On several cuts from later albums, Bonham rather adeptly handled funk and Latin-influenced drumming. Songs like "Royal Orleans" and "Fool in the Rain" are good examples, respectively displaying great skill with a New Orleans shuffle and a samba rhythm.

His famous drum solo, first entitled "Pat's Delight," later renamed "Moby Dick", would often last for 30 minutes and regularly featured his use of bare hands to achieve different sound effects. Bonham's action sequence for the film, The Song Remains the Same, featured him in a drag race at Santa Pod Raceway to the sound of his signature drum solo, "Moby Dick". In Led Zeppelin concert tours after 1969, Bonham would expand his basic kit to include congas, orchestral timpani, and a symphonic gong. Bonham is also credited (by the Dallas Times Herald) with the first in-concert use of electronic timpani drum synthesizers (most likely made by Syndrum) during a performance of the song "Kashmir" in Dallas, Texas in 1977.

Happy Birthday TOM MORELLO (video)

Thomas Baptiste Morello (born May 30, 1964) is an American guitarist best known for his tenure with the bands Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, his acoustic solo act The Nightwatchman, and his newest group, Street Sweeper Social Club. Morello is also the co-founder (along with Serj Tankian) of the non-profit political activist organization Axis of Justice, which airs a monthly program on Pacifica Radio station KPFK (90.7 FM) in Los Angeles.

Born in Harlem, New York and raised in Libertyville, Illinois, Morello became interested in music and politics while in high school. He attended Harvard University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies. After his previous band Lock Up disbanded, Morello met Zack de la Rocha and the two founded Rage Against the Machine together. The group went on to become one of the most popular and influential rock acts of the 1990s. He is best known for his unique and creative guitar playing style, which incorporates feedback noise, unconventional picking and tapping as well as heavy use of guitar effects. Morello is also noted for his leftist political views and activism; his creation of his side project The Nightwatchman offered an outlet for his views while playing apolitical music with Audioslave. He was ranked number 40 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

TESSERACT streams entire new album (audio)

TESSERACT will release their brand new album, Altered State, on May 27th & 28th. Divided into four movements: Of Matter, Of Mind, Of Reality and Of Energy, 'Altered State' represents the transformations that TESSERACT has gone through over the past few years.  The Law of Conservation of Energy states that: In a closed system energy is conserved, nothing is lost. It merely changes from one state to another.

Give it a listen before you buy:

TESSERACT bassist Amos Williams said, "The new album has shaped up to be something of an evolution for TESSERACT. Obviously, there's the new voice, which is exciting for us to work with. Ashe brings such an intense level of emotion to the table, it feels as if we have added another dimension to the music. We've also traveled so much and met so many incredible and inspiring musicians since the first album. This has had a huge impact upon our songwriting.

Also, we now enjoy playing with dynamics and instrumentation. This came from releasing an acoustic EP last year. We're no longer afraid to mix things up or stray from the expected path, which we feel we did with our first album. That was in the box, whilst this album is way out there for us. Don't be afraid, though — whilst it has evolved, our music is still somehow TESSERACT. It's like there is something just beneath the surface of everything we do, that shapes all we produce into a distinctly TESSERACT-ish form."

New vocalist Ashe O'Hara said, "I have always been an admirer of their work so it's pretty awesome to be passed such a challenging flame. I am very aware of the anticipation and I am certainly feeling the weight of it, but I am equally excited for what shall be an amazing and shit-hot experience!"

Lyrics:

Don't tell me your name
I know it ain't gonna change
Anyway that I think

It's not as if you're to blame
If we're one and the same
We're on the edge, on the brink

Come take control
Won't be the soul
Just do as you're told
Come burn a hole
In what they know
Get up and go

Throw matches to see, what you can ignite
Fire Fire, Fire Fire
Throw matches to see, what stays out of sight
Fire Fire, Fire Fire
'Cause when the clouds come down on this town estate
We'll make our way to a great escape
Throw matches to see, what you can ignite

No time to spare
No truth or dare
Give them something to hide
Go with the time
Step on the mines
Our time to shine

Come steal the wind
Come throw the earth
Come bring the storm
Come seize the day
Come make the change
Give them something to mourn

Throw matches to see, what you can ignite
Fire Fire, Fire Fire
Throw matches to see, what stays out of sight
Fire Fire, Fire Fire
'Cause when the clouds come down on this town estate
We'll make our way to a great escape
Throw matches to see, what you can ignite

We're all bought down in desperation
By this dirty town and aggravation
It's time to leave and find another new home
We've had our day our day is done so
In this weird landscape let's do it over
There's no time to waste to find another new home

Throw matches to see, what you can ignite
Fire Fire, Fire Fire
Throw matches to see, what stays out of sight
Fire Fire, Fire Fire
'Cause when the clouds fall down on this town estate
We'll make our way to a great escape
Throw matches to see, what you can ignite

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS and CHESTER BENNINGTON - "Out Of Time" (video)

In February, the other three members of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS made a fairly big deal about firing their vocalist of 20 years, Scott Weiland. (Who was also fired from Velvet Revolver in 2008.) Since February, Weiland has stated, “I started the band. There’s certain clauses in place that keep that from happening.”

Things changed this weekend.

Stone Temple Pilots unveiled their current lineup and their latest song at LA radio station KROQ’s annual weenie roast over the weekend, taking the crowd by surprise. Bennington later said: “I’ve loved STP since I was 13 years old. When the opportunity came up to so something creative with them I jumped at the chance. The guys in Linkin Park have been incredibly supportive of me undertaking this project while I’ve continued to work on new music with LP.”

Guitarist Dean DeLeo added: “We know Linkin Park will always be his priority, but we thought it would be cool to try something together. We managed to find the time to record a song and we’re all really happy with the result.”

SOUND OF CONTACT - "Not Coming Down" (video)

With their debut album release imminent, SOUND OF CONTACT has released their first video for the song, "Not Coming Down"

from the band's site:
With 3 of his own albums under his belt Simon Collins, son of legendary musician Phil Collins, decided to try something he had always wanted to do. Having grown up on tour with Genesis, Simon had a rare and unique perspective that inspired him to eventually pursue his own music career. After a decade of writing, producing and promoting his solo career, Simon kept in touch with a handful of musicians with whom he had a strong connection and a rare chemistry. With a shared vision and strong musical bond they embraced what was clearly an organic evolution and decided to bring their creative forces together.

That band is now here and called “Sound of Contact”. At its core the band consists of Simon and co-producer/co-writer and keyboardist Dave Kerzner (Sonic Reality, Kevin Gilbert) with the additon of such great co-writers and guitarists/bassists as Matt Dorsey and Kelly Nordstrom as well as Hannah Stobart (Rocket Moth, Wishing Tree) as a special guest in the studio. The live touring line up for Sound of Contact includes Simon Collins on vocals and drums, Dave Kerzner on keyboards, Matt Dorsey on bass, John Wesley (Porcupine Tree, Fish) on guitar and Ronen Gordon on drums.

Sound of Contact’s debut album “Dimensionaut” is a concept album about a dimensional time and space traveler called “Dimo” who is on a mission to expand the boundaries of the human experience. The album features a wide range of styles and dynamics from dark and mysterious progressive rock to nostalgic classic rock to high energy alternative to sci-fi film score-infused “space rock”.

  LEPROUS comments:
"While we're anxiously waiting to release 'Coal' to the public, another taste of it is coming your way. A while back we announced a video was in the making, and now everything is ready for your eyes and ears. 'The Cloak' is our second music video, and we're extremely excited to finally release it! Enjoy!"

The video was shot by David Solbjørg of Twichty Films (http://www.twitchyfilms.com)

Another track from the album:

from their 2011 album, Bilateral

Chosen as the backing band for former EMPEROR frontman and countryman Ihsahn (a progressive black metal musician and legend in his own right), LEPROUS has, despite their young age, tried it all-- which is clearly reflected in their music. For every part PAIN OF SALVATION and KING CRIMSON one may hear, there is an equal amount of SHINING (NO) and DEVIN TOWNSEND in the mix, with hints of KATATONIA and OPETH in amidst sparks of PORCUPINE TREE and PINK FLOYD.

Happy Birthday STEVE HOGARTH (video)

Steve Hogarth (born Ronald Stephen Hoggarth on 14 May 1959 in Kendal, Westmorland) also known as "h", is the lead vocalist and occasional keyboardist/guitarist with the British rock band Marillion. Hogarth was formerly a keyboard player and co-lead vocalist with The Europeans and vocalist with How We Live.

In London, Hogarth joined a band called Motion Pictures, having responded to an advertisement in the music press. They were subsequently renamed The Europeans. Initially joining just as a keyboard player, Hogarth also ended up sharing the vocal duties with Ferg Harper. Signed to A&M Records, The Europeans released two studio albums and one live album. On the first studio album, Hogarth sang just one track. By the second studio album, he sang five of the eight tracks.

In 1985, Hogarth and guitarist Colin Woore left the band to form How We Live, the duo were signed to Columbia Records. In 1987, following record company changes, How We Live's debut album Dry Land was poorly promoted, resulting in a flop. Hogarth imagined he would have to leave the music industry - for a time seriously considering becoming a milkman or postman (as he later related) - but a meeting with his publishers (and a certain amount of matchmaking by long time friend, Darryl Way, sometime of Curved Air) persuaded him to send a tape to Marillion, who were recruiting for a new lead vocalist following the departure of Fish in late 1988.

Marillion
heard the tape and were interested enough to ask for a meeting with the singer. Later accounts of this first meeting record that Hogarth turned up at band member Pete Trewavas' house with his demo tapes contained in a red plastic fire bucket - the audition taking place in Trewavas' garage, due to the presence in the house of cats. The band were immediately impressed by his vocal prowess. Hogarth himself, however, took a little longer to make up his mind, holding as he did at the time a potentially lucrative offer to tour the U.S. on keyboards with The The. As he later recalled, he had a choice 'between joining the most hip band in the world at that time, or the least...'. In the end he accepted the Marillion gig, won over by the fact that the band wanted an equal partner; who would input their own ideas.

Hogarth's first album with the band, released in September 1989, was Seasons End, their fifth studio album. Since then, Marillion have recorded another twelve albums with Hogarth on vocals, the most recent being entitled Sounds That Can't Be Made released in September 2012.

Hogarth has also released one solo studio album under the name 'h' called Ice Cream Genius. This album had contributions from ex-Japan/ Porcupine Tree synthesiser/keyboard maestro Richard Barbieri, former XTC guitarist Dave Gregory, Blondie drummer Clem Burke, bassist Chucho Merchan and percussionist Luis Jardim.

In 2012 Hogarth joined forces with Richard Barbieri again, releasing an album as a duo called Not the weapon but the hand.
