Happy Birthday HUGH MCDOWELL (video)

#hughmcdowell #rockfileradio
Hugh McDowell (31 July 1953, Hampstead, London) is an English cellist best known for his membership in Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) and related acts.
McDowell performed with the first live line-up of ELO in 1972 while only 19 years old, but left with founding member Roy Wood and horn player/keyboardist Bill Hunt to perform with the group Wizzard. During his time in Wizzard, he played both cello and Moog synthesizer, but returned to ELO in 1973 to replace Colin Walker. His return was partly motivated by a desire to play more cello and less keyboards as he had done with Wizzard. McDowell remained with the group until Jeff Lynne removed the string players from the line-up. In 1991 he performed with Electric Light Orchestra Part II.
He is involved with computer programming and in 1992 published a music composition program called "Fractal Music Composer." He developed a suite of four programs: Mandelbrot Set Composer, Julia Set Composer, Mandelbrot Zoom and Play Midi.

Happy Birthday JEFFREY HAMMOND (video)

#jeffreyhammond #jethrotull #rockfileradio
Jeffrey Hammond (born 30 July 1946, Blackpool) sometimes credited as Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, is a musician and former bass guitar player for the progressive rock band Jethro Tull.

Hammond adopted the name "Hammond-Hammond" as a joke, since both his father's name and mother's maiden name were the same. He also joked in interviews that his mother defiantly chose to keep her maiden name, just like Eleanor Roosevelt.
One of several band members from Blackpool, England, he met band leader Ian Anderson in school when he was 17 years old, eventually joining a band with Anderson and future Jethro Tull members John Evan and Barriemore Barlow. After leaving Grammar School, he opted to study painting rather than continue with music, but he was convinced to join Jethro Tull in January 1971. During the time of Tull's dramatic stage costumes, Jeffrey started wearing a black and white striped suit and played a matching bass guitar, and this became his trademark and a feature of Tull's Thick as a Brick stage performance. Hammond burned the suit in December 1975 on his departure from the band.

Hammond played on the following albums:

Aqualung (1971)
Thick as a Brick (1972)
Living in the Past (compilation, 1972)
A Passion Play (1973)
War Child (1974)
Minstrel in the Gallery (1975)

He then left the band to continue his career in art. According to Ian Anderson's sleevenotes for the 2002 reissue of Tull's Minstrel in the Gallery, Hammond "returned to his first love, painting, and put down his bass guitar, never to play again."

Songs for which he is the sole composer include "Sky Blues" from 1973, "One Lonely Night" from 1984 and "Variety Tonight" from 1987. The latter two songs charted as Billboard singles, with "One Lonely Night" cracking the top 20.
His most notable playing includes the Hammond Organ solo on "Roll With The Changes" and the honky-tonk piano work on "157 Riverside Avenue". He notes the beginning to "Can't Fight This Feeling" is the most difficult and rewarding to play. He was an early adopter of the Moog Synthesizer, which can be heard on the opening swoop of "Ridin' The Storm Out." Currently he is using synths made by Korg and Yamaha and tours with a Hammond B3 Organ routed through Leslie speaker cabinets.

#jacobyshaddix #paparoach #rockfileradio
Jacoby Dakota Shaddix (born July 28, 1976) is an American songwriter and lead singer for the rock band Papa Roach, as well as the lead singer for the unofficially defunct post-hardcore band Fight the Sky under the pseudonym 'John Doe.' Shaddix was also the host of MTV show Scarred in 2007.
Jacoby Shaddix is the founding member of Papa Roach. He formed the band with former drummer Dave Buckner, bassist Will James, and guitarist Ben Luther, in 1991. Ben was replaced by current guitarist Jerry Horton, Tobin Esperance replacing Will James following his departure. Dave Buckner's role was filled by Tony Palermo, leaving Jacoby the only original member in the band. The band's name Papa Roach, derives from Shaddix' step-grandfather, Howard William Roatch, who went by the nickname 'Papa Roach'. Howard committed suicide in 2006 following a diagnosis with an unspecified form of advanced stage cancer. The song 'Roses On My Grave' was written in his memory. Before releasing their major label debut album Infest, Papa Roach recorded and published an EP in 1994 entitled 'Potatoes For Christmas'. In 1997, their first full-length album, entiltled Old Friends from Young Years, was released.
Shaddix stopped using rapping in later Papa Roach songs. In an interview in 2004, Shaddix said that he became disenchanted with hip hop and what it represented in the media and stated that "I just want to be a rocker". However, in 2012, Jacoby Shaddix started rapping again in the album The Connection, and even stated that it felt good to be rapping again.

Steven J. "Steve" Morse (born 28 July 1954) is an American guitarist and composer, best known as the founder of the Dixie Dregs; and since 1994, the guitar player of Deep Purple. Morse's career has encompassed rock, country, funk, jazz, classical, and fusion of these musical genres. In addition to his successful solo career, he was briefly a member of Kansas in the mid 1980s.
After the 1983 breakup of the Dregs, Morse then formed The Steve Morse Band, a trio with bassist Jerry Peek and drummer Doug Morgan (formerly a member of Glass Moon). After the first tour of the eastern United States, Morgan left for previous commitments. Everyone's choice to replace Morgan (including Doug's) was Rod Morgenstein. They began recording The Introduction in September. The group toured Germany in early 1984 with Morse conducting clinics, and the group was signed by Elektra Records, who released The Introduction mid-year. A second German tour began in December 1984 and Stand Up was released in 1985. This effort included guest vocalists and guitarists (Eric Johnson, Alex Ligertwood, Peter Frampton, Albert Lee, Van Temple), and violinist Mark O'Connor. He toured with Rush as a main opener on their Power Windows tour.

In 1986, Morse joined the rock group Kansas. While with the band, they released two albums, Power and In the Spirit of Things. While he was with the band, Kansas had its last big hit, "All I Wanted," which reached the Billboard Top 20 and on which Morse received co-writing credit. Morse left the band after touring behind the latter album. He re-joined the band for part of their 1991 tour.

From late 1987 to early 1988, Morse worked as a commercial airline co-pilot
In 1994, Morse joined the British hard rock group Deep Purple, replacing Ritchie Blackmore (though Joe Satriani replaced Blackmore for The Battle Rages On tour). Since then, Morse has played on five studio albums Purpendicular, Abandon, Bananas, Rapture of the Deep and Now What?!, as well as seven of their live albums.

In 2011, Morse formed Flying Colors, an American supergroup composed of Mike Portnoy, Dave LaRue, Casey McPherson and Neal Morse, whose debut eponymous album was released on 26 March 2012, and debuted at No. 9 on Billboard's Hard Rock chart, and No. 11 on the BBC's Rock Album charts.

Happy Birthday GREGG GIUFFRIA (video)

#gregggiufria #angel #giuffria #houseoflords #rockfileradio
Gregg Giuffria (born 28 July 1951) is an American rock musician and businessman. He was the keyboardist for AOR bands Angel, House of Lords and Giuffria.
Giuffria is originally from Gulfport, Mississippi, graduating from high school in 1969. A talented keyboardist, he moved to the US West Coast where in the mid 1970s he joined Angel. After the band broke up in 1981 Giuffria put together his own band, Giuffria, with vocalist David Glen Eisley, guitarist Craig Goldy, bassist Chuck Wright, and drummer Alan Krigger, and achieved some success with their first eponymous album and first single "Call To The Heart," which made the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band broke up after the commercial failure of their next album "Silk and Steel" in 1986.
Giuffria then put together the House of Lords with the help of Kiss' Gene Simmons and signed to Simmons' label. The first album House of Lords, was released in 1988 and experienced a modest amount of commercial success with the single "I Wanna Be Loved". However, this success was not consolidated as the band were unwilling to tour.

However, Simmons decided there was enough potential to warrant the release of a second album, and in 1990 the band released Sahara. The album reached #120 on the Biilboard charts and in the wake of the successful single "Can't Find My Way Home" (a Blind Faith cover) was certified platinum in 1991.
A final album Demons Down, was released for the Japanese market in 1992. The band broke up in 1993. House of Lords has since reunited, but without Giuffria, although he does appear on their 2006 release World Upside Down as a guest keyboardist. Gregg worked on a solo album with an expected release in 2006, but as Hurricane Katrina wiped out his business ventures in Biloxi, it is uncertain when the solo project will ever be released.
Gregg was also the CEO of the Las Vegas based Outland Development LLC, that designed and built gaming machines and theme park attractions, and was president of casino operator Full House Resorts from 1998 to 2000. He is also co-owner of the Biloxi Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, along with partners Roy Anderson III and David Ross. Gregg now lives in California.

Happy Birthday SIMON KIRKE (video)

#simonkirke #free #badcompany #rockfileradio
Simon Frederick St. George Kirke (born 28 July 1949) is an English rock drummer best known as a member of Free and Bad Company.
Kirke was born in Lambeth, South London, England, the son of Olive May and Vivian Percy Kirke. He spent his early years living in the countryside of Wales. Leaving school at 17, he returned to London and set about finding a drumming job in the booming blues scene. After a fruitless 22 months he was resigned to returning to the country when he met Paul Kossoff who was playing in a band called Black Cat Bones. Kirke was offered the drumming position in the band for which he played for six months.
Kirke and Paul Kossoff left the band and with Paul Rodgers and Andy Fraser formed Free. In the four years Free were together they had an enormous influence on many bands on both sides of the Atlantic. Their biggest hit, "All Right Now", was a number one in more than 20 territories and was acknowledged by ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) in 1990 as having received more than 1,000,000 radio plays in the US by late 1989. In 2000 an award was given to Paul Rodgers by the British Music Industry when "All Right Now" passed 2,000,000 radio plays in the UK.
After the disbanding of Free in 1973, Kirke and Rodgers again teamed up to form Bad Company. They were joined by guitarist Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople) and bassist Boz Burrell (King Crimson).

After Bad Company disbanded in 1982, Kirke was briefly involved with another band, Wildlife. Wildlife toured in support of the Michael Schenker Band around this time in the UK; their album was produced by former Bad Company bandmate Ralphs, and it also featured Kirke playing saxophone on one track entitled 'Charity'. Despite being signed to Led Zeppelin's label, Swan Song, and Kirke's high-profile involvement, the album failed to sell. Wildlife's core members, brothers Chris and Steve Overland went onto greater success with the band FM. Kirke returned to Bad Company when the band reformed in 1986.

Richard William "Rick" Wright (28 July 1943 – 15 September 2008) was an English musician, composer, singer and songwriter, best known for his career with Pink Floyd. A multi-instrumentalist, Wright's richly textured keyboard layers were a vital ingredient and a distinctive characteristic of Pink Floyd's sound. Wright frequently sang harmony and occasionally lead vocals on stage and in the studio with Pink Floyd (most notably on the songs "Time", "Echoes", "Us and Them", "Wearing the Inside Out", "Astronomy Domine" and "Matilda Mother").
Though not as prolific a songwriter as his band mates Roger Waters, Syd Barrett and David Gilmour, he wrote significant parts of the music for classic albums such as Meddle, The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, as well as for Pink Floyd's The Division Bell.

Happy Birthday ABE CUNNINGHAM (video)

#abecunningham #deftones #rockfileradio
Abraham "Abe" Cunningham, (born July 27, 1973) is an American musician, best known as the drummer of the alternative metal band Deftones.
Abe Cunningham was born in Long Beach, California. When he was young, his family moved to Sacramento. He first started drumming in his early teens playing the drums for his band Phallucy in the early 90s. During this time, he also drummed for the Deftones on the side, when the band was having problems landing a permanent and dedicated drummer. At the time when he started learning drums, he also learned how to play guitar, but growing up with a stepfather (Neil) who played the drums, he took a deeper passion with the drums. Abe's father, Sid, was also a musician and an early influence for Abe before his untimely passing. His influences include Stewart Copeland, Ginger Baker and Mitch Mitchell.
Cunningham is known for his frantic, pounding rhythms on such songs as "Knife Party" and clever usage of tempo ("Mein"), while at the same time refusing to indulge in the double bass drum setup of many metal traditionalists. However, he does use a double bass pedal as part of his kit, as seen in various drum magazines. A BBC reviewer has praised his style for displaying " the assured expressiveness of a musician whose abilities stretch further than most metal-scene sticksmen".

Happy Birthday GARY CHERONE (video)

#garycherone #extreme #rockfileradio
Gary Francis Caine Cherone
(born July 26, 1961) is an American rock singer-songwriter. He is best known for his work with the rock group Extreme, as well as his short stint as the lead singer for Van Halen on their 11th album Van Halen III and subsequent tour. In recent years he has released solo recordings. In 2007, he reunited with Extreme. The band's latest album Saudades de Rock was released on August 12, 2008.

In 1985, Cherone and Geary met guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and bassist Pat Badger in an altercation over a dressing room, but the rivals soon became collaborators and shortly after the combined foursome took the name Extreme, and began writing their own material. By the late 1980s, the group had attracted a large regional following; in 1987, the band signed with A&M Records, which released their self-titled debut album in 1989. Selling over 250,000 copies, the band's debut album justified a second, and in 1990 the band recorded the critically acclaimed Extreme II: Pornograffiti, a fiery mix of hard rock, funk, and pop propelled by Bettencourt's extraordinary guitar playing. The album's lyrical content, mostly written by Cherone, was loosely based on the concept of a fictional young boy named "Francis" and his observations of a decadent, corrupt, and misogynistic society.

Although well received by the rock world in the press, initial sales and chart success for the album were sluggish until A&M released the acoustic ballad "More Than Words" in the early spring of 1991. The song was picked up by mainstream radio and became a huge smash, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 that summer. Extreme II: Pornograffiti was eventually certified quadruple platinum and remains a notable entry in the genre. Also in 1991, Extreme toured in support of David Lee Roth.

Cherone's career came full circle in April 1992 when he performed "Hammer to Fall" onstage with the three surviving members of Queen in The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium. (Extreme also performed a medley of Queen hits earlier in the day.) Later that year, Extreme released III Sides To Every Story, a concept album known by the band as their finest work. This album marked the pinnacle of the band's creative ability as a whole.

As the decade progressed, the sudden popularity of grunge brought about a sea change in the pop music industry, causing 80s rock and glam to gain less commercial support from labels. In response, Extreme's 1995 recording, Waiting for the Punchline, was a stripped-down and cynical affair that was only modestly successful. After the supporting tour, Bettencourt became dissatisfied and left the group to launch a solo career. Extreme officially folded almost immediately afterward.

In 1996, one of the world's most famous rock bands, Van Halen, had a falling out with their 2nd lead singer, Sammy Hagar, who had been with the band since 1985. After a failed reunion attempt with original lead vocalist, David Lee Roth, who had been with Van Halen from 1974-1985, Van Halen was once again without a lead vocalist. At the urging of Van Halen's manager, Ray Danniels, (who also managed Extreme,) Cherone was called for an audition. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen liked Cherone's lyrics, as well as his work ethic, and in November 1996, Cherone became Van Halen's third lead vocalist. That year, Cherone took up residence in Eddie Van Halen's guest house and spent the next year writing and recording a new studio album.

Released on March 17, 1998, Van Halen III debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 album charts, selling 197,000 copies in its first week; 500,000 by summer (RIAA gold certified in the United States;) and over 700,000 copies as of 2011. Van Halen III featured an eclectic and diverse set of songs, marking a departure from the straightforward arena rock that Van Halen had played with Hagar, and contrasting with the tongue-in-cheek bombast that originally attracted Van Halen fans to singer David Lee Roth. Van Halen III's songs were often longer and more lyrically intricate than earlier Van Halen material. The album only produced one #1 Billboard rock hit: "Without You." Additionally, the track "Fire in the Hole" appears in a famous scene in Lethal Weapon 4 where a madman is shown setting cars and other items on fire.

By most band's standards the album would have been considered an unmitigated commercial success, but by Van Halen's standards, it was considered a flop. Neither the album nor the supporting tour performed to financial expectations (III was the first album in the band's career to not achieve at least double platinum status;) however, the tour was well received by fans. The tour brought back many older Van Halen songs that fans had wanted to hear since Roth's initial departure in 1984. This was largely because Sammy Hagar refused to play all but the most famous of Roth-era songs. Unlike the band's subsequent 2004 and 2007-2008 tours, Van Halen toured outside of North America in 1998, playing dates in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe as well. One date in Australia was filmed and aired on MTV.

Plans progressed for a follow-up album, to be released at the end of 1999. Releasing a new studio album a year after the previous one had not been done by Van Halen since 1982, when the band released Diver Down. Reportedly, in 1999, Van Halen's (then) record company, Warner Brothers, sent back the new Van Halen album twice, because they did not hear a "hit" pop single on it. Frustrated, Gary left Van Halen amicably. Since then, Cherone has remained on good terms with his former bandmates, and has gone on record numerous times with his thoughts on why the collaboration didn't work out.

After his departure from Van Halen, Cherone returned to Boston and put together a new project, Tribe of Judah. The band played several shows in the Boston area and released a CD on Spitfire Records entitled Exit Elvis.

He has on occasion guested with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony during their The Other Half performances, and Nuno Bettencourt's recent projects, as well as with the Boston Rock Opera.

In February 2003, just one week after The Station Nightclub Fire, Gary and his brother, Markus, performed "More Than Words" during a memorial service for the victims. The memorial was broadcast live on WHJY in Providence, RI.

In 2005, Cherone released a four song sampler CD, Need I Say More that was written and produced by Steve Catizone and Leo Mellace. This album was recorded by Jeff Yurek at Sanctum Sound in Boston, Massachusetts and mixed by Carl Nappa in New York City. Musicians including Dave DiCenso (drums), Baron Browne (bass) and Steve Hunt (keyboards) are also featured on the record.

In May 2006, Cherone sang in three shows as part of Amazing Journey, a tribute to The Who created by ex Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, featuring Paul Gilbert on guitar and Billy Sheehan on bass. Not long after, Gary and his brother Markus Cherone created their own tribute to The Who, Slip Kid. Presently the band continues to perform regularly in the Greater Boston area.

Later that year, Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cherone's three-year stint with the group did not establish him as a band member eligible for induction. However, at the televised induction ceremony, the group's former bassist Michael Anthony thanked Cherone for his contributions.

Happy Birthday MICK JAGGER (video)

#therollingstones #mickjagger #rockfileradio
Sir Michael Philip "Mick" Jagger, OBE (born 26 July 1943) is an English musician, singer, songwriter and actor, best known as the lead vocalist and a founding member of The Rolling Stones.

Jagger's career has spanned over 50 years, and he has been described as "one of the most popular and influential front men in the history of rock & roll". His distinctive voice and performance, along with Keith Richards' guitar style, have been the trademark of The Rolling Stones throughout the career of the band. In 1989, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Rolling Stones.

Jagger gained much press notoriety for admitted drug use and romantic involvements, and was often portrayed as a counter-cultural figure. In the late 1960s Jagger began acting in films (starting with Performance and Ned Kelly), to mixed reception. In 1985, Jagger released his first solo album, She's the Boss, and was knighted in 2003. In early 2009, he joined the electric supergroup SuperHeavy.

Mick Jagger was born into a middle-class family in Dartford, Kent, England. His father, Basil Fanshawe ("Joe") Jagger (13 April 1913 – 11 November 2006), and his grandfather David Ernest Jagger were both teachers. His mother, Eva Ensley Mary (née Scutts; 6 April 1913 – 18 May 2000), born in New South Wales, Australia, of English descent, was a hairdresser and an active member of the Conservative Party. Jagger is the elder of two sons (his brother Chris Jagger was born on 19 December 1947) and was brought up to follow in his father's career path.

In the book According to the Rolling Stones, Jagger states "I was always a singer. I always sang as a child. I was one of those kids who just liked to sing. Some kids sing in choirs; others like to show off in front of the mirror. I was in the church choir and I also loved listening to singers on the radio – the BBC or Radio Luxembourg – or watching them on TV and in the movies."
