Happy Birthday RICHARD BARBIERI (video)

#richardbarbieri #porcupinetree #rockfileradio
Richard Barbieri (born 30 November 1957, in London, England) is an English synthesizer player, keyboardist and composer. He was educated at Catford Boys' School, Catford, South East London. Originally coming to prominence in the late-1970s and early-1980s as a member of new wave pioneers Japan (and their brief 1989–1990 reincarnation as Rain Tree Crow), he is now best known as the keyboard player in the progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, of which he has been a member since 1993.
Despite being known for work in bands with prominent musicianship, Barbieri's key skill lies not in virtuoso instrumental performance, but in developing and processing synthetic electronic sound. This is either generated entirely by keyboard input or by processing a sound source from a musical collaborator. He has cited Karlheinz Stockhausen as a central influence, and his approach could also be compared to similar "non-virtuoso" art rock musicians such as Brian Eno.

During his time with Japan, Barbieri worked (with the assistance of lead singer/occasional keyboard player David Sylvian) on programming the band's analogue (and early digital) synthesizers to create original sounds and textures. On record, these were played by whichever member of Japan could interpret the performance best (generally drummer Steve Jansen, as "he had the best timing.") Barbieri would, however, perform the bulk of the keyboard playing live. His keyboard-playing role in Porcupine Tree is similarly split with frontman/producer Steven Wilson, with Barbieri processing the sound of other musicians in the band as well as playing more orthodox keyboard parts.
Despite his emphasis on sonic experimentation, Barbieri is also an accomplished keyboard player who has become more overtly traditional in his playing during his sixteen years with Porcupine Tree (and who currently plays electric and acoustic pianos and Mellotrons in addition to his analogue-styled synthesizer work).

Happy Birthday ROGER GLOVER (video)

#rogerglover #deeppurple #rainbow #rockfileradio
Roger David Glover (born 30 November 1945 in Brecon) is a British bassist, songwriter, and record producer. Glover is best known as the bassist for hard rock bands, Deep Purple and Rainbow.

Born near Brecon, Wales, Glover moved with his family to St Helens before settling in the South Kensington area of London, at the age of ten. Around that time, Glover's interests started to shift towards rock music, and by the time he was thirteen, Glover began playing guitar. He later moved to the North London district of Pinner and while at Harrow County School for Boys Glover formed his first band, Madisons, with a group of friends, which later merged with a rival band to become Episode Six, a band which later featured Glover's future Deep Purple bandmate, vocalist Ian Gillan. The two left Episode Six in 1969 to join Deep Purple.

After spending four years with Deep Purple, where the band saw their most successful releases in the albums, in Rock and Machine Head, Glover, along with Gillan, departed after Deep Purple's second tour of Japan in the summer of 1973. Glover said, "I wrote the riff to "Maybe I'm a Leo" after hearing John Lennon's "How Do You Sleep?".
Throughout the 1970s, Glover went on to produce such acts as Judas Priest, Nazareth, Elf, the Ian Gillan Band, and David Coverdale.

In 1974, Glover released his first solo album, Butterfly Ball, and in 1978, released his second solo album entitled Elements.

From 1979 to 1984, he was the bassist, lyricist and producer for Ritchie Blackmore's solo band, Rainbow, working on four of the group's studio albums.

In 1983 he recorded his third solo album, Mask, released the next year. When in April 1984 Deep Purple reformed, Glover returned to his old band where he has remained for the last three decades.

In 1988, Glover and fellow Deep Purple member, Ian Gillan, recorded the side-project album, Accidentally on Purpose. Almost two decades later, Glover played with Ian Gillan during Gillan's brief solo tour in 2006.
In 2002, Glover released his fourth solo album entitled Snapshot under the name Roger Glover & The Guilty Party. The album featured performances from Randall Bramblett (who shared co-writing credits on several tracks) as well as Glover's daughter, Gillian.

In 2011, Glover released his fifth solo album, If Life Was Easy, which featured guest appearances by Nazareth's Dan McCafferty and Pete Agnew as well as Walther Gallay and Daniel "Sahaj" Ticotin.

Happy Birthday FRANK DELGADO (video)

#frankdelgado #deftones #rockfileradio
Frank Delgado (born November 29, 1970) is an American musician. He samples and plays turntables and keyboards for Deftones.

Delgado performed in the Los Angeles-based band Socialistics, a frequent opener for Deftones, when the Sacramento alt-metal outfit began asking him to provide additional sounds and samples to their music. He was a guest performer on several songs on the group's second album, Around the Fur, and was formally inaugurated into the group just before their third release White Pony (2000).
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, it was not uncommon for hard rock or heavy metal groups to have a DJ. However, Delgado stood apart from the pack due to his creativity; his playing rarely featured traditional scratching or beat juggling. Instead, he tends to use turntables as a sampler to integrate subtle sounds and textures into the music, remisicent of electronic music, ambient, or even musique concrète from the 1940s and '50s. Good examples of Delgado's inventive touch include "MX" (from Around the Fur) which features distorted human laughter and a strange, pitch-shifted sound vaguely reminiscent of glass breaking in slow-motion; the quieter moments of "Digital Bath" (from White Pony) feature burbling, watery noises.

With the band's fourth album, Deftones, Delgado began to put more emphasis on keyboards and synthesizers as part of his repertoire. Delgado has also commented that he creates his own samples, rather than use pre-recorded sample banks or borrowing sounds from other artists.
Delgado is also in a DJ collective known as the Decibel Devils together with DJ Crook, who is also involved in Team Sleep, a side project of Deftones frontman Chino Moreno.

Happy Birthday BARRY GOUDREAU (video)

#barrygoudreau #boston #orionthehunter #rockfileradio
Barry Goudreau (born November 29, 1951) is a musician, best known as one of the original guitarists for the rock band Boston.

Goudreau had developed a musical interest at an early age and got his first guitar, an acoustic which he borrowed from a friend, at age 11. He began taking lessons and by age 13, joined his first band, the "Tornadoes". At age 15, he joined another band with future Boston drummer Sib Hashian. They would often play at night clubs, sometimes seven times a week. Later, he met up with Brad Delp and Fran Sheehan, both future members of Boston. He auditioned for Delp's band, but didn't make the cut as he explains here:

It was around this time that I met Fran Sheehan and Brad Delp. Fran's house was the place musicians went to and jam. We had some great times there, refining our chops until the wee hours. I'm sure the neighbors didn't appreciate it as much as we did. I met Brad when I auditioned for his band. The guitar player had decided to leave and brought me there as his replacement. Brad sang Led Zeppelin's “Communication Breakdown”. I had never heard anybody sing like that before, I will never forget it. Unfortunately, I did not get the gig.

When he went to college at Boston University, he sought to get a degree in Geology. He tried to put music aside to focus on school, but he soon met up with Tom Scholz who was right across the river at MIT.

The group evolved from Goudreau's college band "Mother's Milk" which also included Tom Scholz and Brad Delp. Goudreau worked with Scholz and Delp as early as 1969 on an initial set of demo tapes, where he performed all of the rhythm and lead guitar work. These early attempts to attract record label interest did not succeed.

Eventually we put together a demo tape, and brought it to New York to shop for a record contract. I remember sitting in waiting rooms, not able to get past the receptionist. I think it was these several years of constant rejection that drove Tom to continue to refine the songs and recordings to a point where they could no longer be denied.

Later, Scholz re-worked and re-recorded some of these demo songs and wrote several new songs for a second set of demo tapes, this time with Scholz performing all of the guitar, bass and keyboard parts. This second demo set won a recording contract with Epic Records.

Although Goudreau is not credited with any songwriting on any Boston tracks, his guitar work was an integral part of the Boston trademark sound and style. Goudreau composed and performed the lead work for "Foreplay/Long Time", Don't Look Back, and "Used To Bad News" and provided much creative input to the primary songwriter, Tom Scholz. In late 1979, Scholz became involved in legal and contractual battles with the band's manager, and later on, with CBS. Thereafter, he informed the members of Boston that he would not be working on Boston material for at least a year and that they should feel free to do solo projects.

By this time, Goudreau had written many songs in hopes that Scholz would incorporate them into the next Boston LP. Scholz did not express interest in using any of Goudreau's work. In 1980, Goudreau recorded his first solo LP titled Barry Goudreau, using Brad Delp and Fran Cosmo (who would join Boston in 1991) on vocals, and Sib Hashian (then drummer for Boston) on drums. The record company sought to cash in big time with this "almost Boston" line-up. The LP successfully hit the airwaves with the songs "Dreams" and "Mean Woman Blues". The album was promoted as a kind of "Boston-lite" and when Scholz caught word of this he was furious. Ultimately, it was this album that triggered Scholz to ask Goudreau to leave Boston.
In 1984, Goudreau formed the band Orion The Hunter and released a debut LP. This time, Fran Cosmo appeared as lead vocalist, while Delp provided backing vocals and co-wrote five of the album's songs. The album included the single "So You Ran". The band then added keyboardist and backing vocalist Brian Maes and toured in support of Aerosmith in 1984 but ultimately broke up in 1985.

In 1990 Goudreau formed the band RTZ (Return to Zero). Delp left Boston to join the band. RTZ experienced some success with the hit "Until Your Love Comes Back Around", which was written by Brian Maes. Delp and Goudreau felt that the record company was not supporting the band to the best of their abilities and asked to be released from their contract. They later signed with MTM Records; however, Delp departed shortly after to rejoin Boston.
In 1997 Goudreau appeared with the Lisa Guyer Band on the album Gypsy Girl and in 2000 on the album Leap of Faith.

In 1998, RTZ regrouped to release their second album Lost with less success than the debut.

Happy Birthday JIMI HENDRIX (video)

#jimihendrix #rockfileradio
James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. Despite a relatively brief mainstream career spanning four years, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music."
Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1961, he enlisted in the US Army; he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. Soon afterward, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, and began playing gigs on the chitlin' circuit, eventually earning a place in the Isley Brothers' backing band and later finding work with Little Richard, with whom he continued to play through mid-1965. He then joined Curtis Knight and the Squires before moving to England in late 1966 after having been discovered by bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals. Within months, Hendrix had earned three UK top ten hits with the Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary". He achieved fame in the US after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and in 1968 his third and final studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached number one in the US. The double LP was Hendrix's most commercially successful release and his first and only number one album. He headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 as the world's highest-paid performer before dying from barbiturate-related asphyxia on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27.
Hendrix was inspired musically by American rock and roll and electric blues. He favored overdriven amplifiers with high volume and gain, and was instrumental in developing the previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback. He helped to popularize the use of a wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock, and was the first artist to use stereophonic phasing effects in music recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone commented: "Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began."

Hendrix was the recipient of several music awards during his lifetime and posthumously. In 1967, readers of Melody Maker voted him the Pop Musician of the Year and in 1968, Billboard named him the Artist of the Year and Rolling Stone declared him the Performer of the Year. Disc and Music Echo honored him with the World Top Musician of 1969 and in 1970, Guitar Player named him the Rock Guitarist of the Year. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked their three studio albums, Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland, among the 100 greatest albums of all time and they ranked Hendrix as the greatest guitarist and the sixth greatest artist of all time.

Happy Birthday BEV BEVAN (video)

#bevbevan #elo #rockfileradio
Beverley "Bev" Bevan (born 24 November 1944) is an English rock musician, who was the drummer and one of the original members of The Move and Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). After the end of ELO in 1986, he founded ELO Part II.
Bevan also served as the touring drummer for Black Sabbath from 1983-1984, and played percussion on The Eternal Idol album in 1987.

Bevan was born in Sparkhill, Birmingham, England. After education at Moseley Grammar School where he gained two O level passes, he worked as a trainee buyer in a city centre department store called The Beehive with school friend Jasper Carrott. His professional music career started with a stint with Denny Laine in his group Denny Laine and the Diplomats, then with Carl Wayne & the Vikings, followed by The Move in 1966. The Electric Light Orchestra released their first album in 1971, by which time The Move existed only as a recording outfit. They released their final single, "California Man" in 1972.
Bevan has a deep singing voice. While with The Move he lent lead vocals to two tracks: a remake of "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart" and the country and western spoof, "Ben Crawley Steel Co". He composed two Move songs: the rock-bluesTurkish Tram Conductor Blues from the album Looking On; and the Elvis Presley spoof Don't Mess Me Up, from the album Message from the Country. The latter song was the B-side of The Move's single Tonight.

He recorded a solo single in 1976, a cover version of the Sandy Nelson instrumental, "Let There Be Drums". Bevan played on all but one Electric Light Orchestra and ELO Part II albums (the exception being 2001's Zoom which marked Lynne's return to recording under the ELO name, with only Richard Tandy present from previous band line-ups). In 1980 Bevan published a historical memoir of the Electric Light Orchestra.

In 1983 he replaced Bill Ward for the Black Sabbath Born Again tour. Bevan was known for his heavy powerhouse drumming during this tour. Bevan also appeared in two music videos ("Trashed" and "Zero the Hero").

After the death of Carl Wayne in 2004, he formed a new band, Bev Bevan's Move, with Phil Tree and former ELO Part II colleagues Phil Bates and Neil Lockwood, to play a set comprising mostly The Move classics on tour. Bates left in July 2007 to re-join ELO Part II, by then renamed to The Orchestra.

In the 2010 release from Paul Weller, Wake Up The Nation, Bevan played drums on two songs: "Moonshine" and "Wake Up The Nation".
Bevan currently presents a radio show on BBC Radio West Midlands on Sunday afternoons. He also reviews records for the Midlands' Sunday Mercury and has a blog on their website. It was announced at the Best of Broad Street Awards on 17 January 2011 that Bevan would be honored with a star on the Birmingham Walk of Stars.

Bevan is also a patron of The Dorridge Music School (Knowle)

Happy Birthday GARY GREEN (video)

#garygreen #gentlegiant #rockfileradio
Gary Green (born Gary William Green, 20 November 1950 in Stroud Green, North London, England) is a British musician. During the 1970s, he was the guitarist for the progressive rock band Gentle Giant. Green was with the band from the debut album Gentle Giant all the way to the last album Civilian. Green's style was different from most of his peers, being a more "blues" based guitarist. Like his other band members, Green was also adept at other instruments, including mandolin and recorder among others. According to a 2008 interview, founding member Phil Shulman said that, despite Green's blues influences, he fitted in well with the band's progressive style since Green was "quick on the up-take."
Later on, he was a member of the band Mother Tongue, and also recorded on the Zinc – The Green Album album with Eddie Jobson.
In recent years, Green has been working with Billy Sherwood on a number of projects, including Back Against The Wall (2005) and Return to the Dark Side of the Moon (2006)
