Laurence Joseph "Larry" Mullen, Jr. (born 31 October 1961) is an Irish musician and the drummer for the Irish rock band U2. One of the four original founders of U2, he would relate that he described the band as "'The Larry Mullen Band' for about ten minutes, then Bono walked in and blew any chance I had of being in charge."

He has worked on numerous side projects during his career, including a collaboration with Michael Stipe and Mike Mills of R.E.M. to form Automatic Baby in 1993 and working with bandmate Adam Clayton on the re-recording of the theme to Mission: Impossible, in 1996. He has been awarded, both as part of U2 and in his own right, 22 Grammy awards.

Happy Birthday CHRIS SLADE (video)

#chrisslade #acdc #manfredmannsearthband #rockfileradio
Chris Slade (born Christopher Rees; 30 October 1946) is a Welsh rock drummer. He is best known for being the drummer for AC/DC from 1989 to 1994, performing on their album The Razors Edge. He has also played with Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Tom Jones, Toomorrow, the Firm, and Asia.

Slade was born in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, South Wales. He has worked with Gary Numan, Tom Jones, Olivia Newton-John (as co-members of the band Toomorrow), and Uriah Heep. He was a member of Manfred Mann's Earth Band from 1972 to 1978. In the mid-1980s, Slade played with Paul Rodgers and Jimmy Page in The Firm. He has played with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Gary Moore on his 1989 world tour.
Slade received his highest exposure in November 1989 when he was asked to join the Australian hard rock band AC/DC after their then-drummer Simon Wright had departed. AC/DC were signed to the same management company as Gary Moore who Slade had just finished touring with. The Young brothers (Angus and Malcolm) initially hired Slade only temporarily through management, then asked him during the recording of the only album he made with them, to join the band. Slade played on The Razors Edge album in 1990 and the accompanying world tour, and the "Big Gun" single released in 1993. According to Slade, after working on demos for the following album, Ballbreaker, Malcolm Young called Slade and told him they wanted to try a reunion with former drummer Phil Rudd. Slade replied, "That's me out then, I'm gone." Young said that he wanted to keep Slade on hand if Rudd's return did not work out, but Slade refused. However, he has stated that he still gets on well with AC/DC and "it was an honour and a privilege to play with those guys".

After his departure, Slade spent a few years living in the UK countryside before receiving a call from Geoff Downes from the British progressive rock group Asia. Slade was with Asia for six years, before departing in September 2005.
Slade now fronts an AC/DC tribute band called Chris Slade Steel Circle, and is touring with The Chris Slade Timeline – a band formed to celebrate 50 years as a rock drummer. The band takes music from all aspects of his lengthy career.

Happy Birthday GRACE SLICK (video)

 #graceslick #jeffersonairplane #jeffersonstarship #rockfileradio
Grace Slick (born October 30, 1939) is an American singer, songwriter, artist, and former model, best known as one of the lead singers of the rock groups The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship, as well as for her work as a solo artist from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s.
Slick's music career started in 1964 in San Francisco when she and then husband Jerry Slick formed their own band, influenced by The Beatles as well as by a performance by the freshly-formed Jefferson Airplane at The Matrix and who, Slick realized, maintained an impressive revenue in comparison to her earnings as a model while having fun performing. Grace and Jerry Slick and Jerry's brother Darby Slick and other friends named themselves The Great Society after the social reform program of the same name, beginning during the autumn of 1965 and by early 1966 becoming a popular psychedelic act in the Bay area. By the summer of 1966, The Great Society was recording, releasing one single in San Francisco, a precursor to the future Jefferson Airplane success "Somebody to Love", which was written by Darby. Grace provided vocals, guitar, piano and recorder and co-wrote a majority of the band's songs with her brother-in-law.
That autumn Jefferson Airplane's singer Signe Toly Anderson left the band to start a family, and Jack Casady asked Slick to join them. Slick stated that she joined the Airplane because it was run in a professional manner, unlike The Great Society. She took two compositions from The Great Society with her: "White Rabbit", which she is purported to have written in an hour, and "Somebody to Love", both of which went on to become hits and to appear on Rolling Stone's top 500 greatest songs of all time. Though both songs were first performed by The Great Society, their versions of the songs were much different: the Great Society's rendering of "White Rabbit" featured an oboe solo by Slick.
With Slick on board the Airplane began recording new music, and they took on a psychedelic direction from their former folk-rock. By 1967, Surrealistic Pillow and the singles taken from it were great successes, and Jefferson Airplane became one of the most popular bands in the country. Slick earned a position as one of the most prominent female rock musicians of her time. Other songs she recorded with Jefferson Airplane include "Two Heads", "Lather" and "Greasy Heart". In 1968, Slick performed "Crown of Creation" on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in blackface and ended the performance with a Black Panther fist. In an appearance on a 1969 episode of the Dick Cavett Show, she became the first person to say "motherfucker" on live television during a performance of "We Can Be Together" by Jefferson Airplane.

After Jefferson Airplane terminated, Slick – along with other bandmates – formed Jefferson Starship and began a string of solo albums with Manhole, followed by Dreams, Software, and Welcome to the Wrecking Ball. Manhole also featured keyboardist/bassist Pete Sears who later joined the original Jefferson Starship in 1974. Sears and Slick penned several early Jefferson Starship songs together, including "Hyperdrive" and "Play On Love".

Happy Birthday PETER GREEN (video)

#petergreen #fleetwoodmac #rockfileradio
Peter Green (born Peter Allen Greenbaum, 29 October 1946) is a British blues rock guitarist and the founder of the band Fleetwood Mac. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for his work with the group, Green's songs have been recorded by artists such as Santana, Aerosmith, Midge Ure, Tom Petty, Gary Moore and Judas Priest.

A major figure and bandleader in the "second great epoch" of the British blues movement, Green inspired B. B. King to say, "He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats." Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page have both lauded his guitar playing. Green's playing was marked with idiomatic string bending and vibrato and economy of style. Though he played other guitars, he is best known for deriving a unique tone from his 1959 Gibson Les Paul.

He was ranked 38th in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". His tone on the Bluesbreakers instrumental "The Super-Natural" was rated as one of the 50 greatest of all time by Guitar Player. In June 1996 Green was voted the third-best guitarist of all time in Mojo magazine.

Happy Birthday DAVE WYNDORF (video)

#davewyndorf #monstermagnet #rockfileradio
David "Dave" Albert Wyndorf is the songwriter, lead vocalist, and a guitarist for the American rock group Monster Magnet. He is the frontman and only remaining original member of the band. He is also an occasional guest on the podcast "Tell 'Em Steve-Dave!".

During most part of the 1990s, Wyndorf and his band struggled for commercial success which they couldn't obtain because of their highly unfashionable retro-rock style. This changed in 1998, when Wyndorf took a 21 day trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, from which he drew inspiration to write the songs for Powertrip, which would be Monster Magnet's breakthrough album. His life following the release of Powertrip was his inspiration for God Says No.
Wyndorf travelled to Los Angeles, California to work for the soundtrack of the movie Torque, which was entirely composed by him. During his stay in LA, he found inspiration for Monolithic Baby!, Monster Magnet's 2004 album.

Happy Birthday K. K. DOWNING (video)

#kkdowning #judaspriest #rockfileradio
Kenneth "K. K." Downing, Jr. (born 27 October 1951) is an English semi-retired Grammy Award winning guitarist, songwriter and a founding member of the British heavy metal band Judas Priest.

Downing was born in West Bromwich. He was kicked out of his home at 15 and dropped out of school soon afterward. In the late 1960s, Kenneth discovered rock music and the guitar. He is a mostly self-taught guitarist. "He was heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix, after whom he modelled his playing style.". Records by popular artists which have influenced Downing as a musician include, "Are You Experienced", "Axis Bold As Love", "Electric Ladyland" by Jimi Hendrix, "A Hard Road" by John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and "Fresh Cream" by Cream. Downing played on every Judas Priest album from Rocka Rolla to A Touch of Evil: Live.
Downing started his first band between the age of 17 and 18 with his second cousin Brian Badhams on bass guitar (now with The Elkie Brooks Band) and drummer Martin Philips. The trio "mainly jammed a few Cream songs and a few 12-bar blues". Downing played guitar with the band after winning a coin toss with his cousin Brian "in his bedroom to see who would play guitar or bass".

Prior to joining Judas Priest, Downing went to catering college and worked as trainee chef at the Lyttelton Arms in Hagley.
Downing has been noted for his aggressive, rock influenced guitar solos and dual leads with fellow Judas Priest guitarist Glenn Tipton. His solos remained of this style for most of his career, but he incorporated various techniques into his playing over the years. As opposed to Tipton, his solos tended to incorporate a more raw, rough-edged sound, making use of techniques like pinch harmonics, dive bombs, and tremolo picking, and often focus on speed, technical accuracy and melody. Although the two would switch roles, Downing's usual job on Judas Priest songs was as the rhythm guitarist with Tipton playing solos (the band's signature song "You Got Another Thing Comin'" is an example of such). From Stained Class onward, Tipton came to increasingly dominate Judas Priest's songwriting, particular on the more commercial tracks and Downing's role in the band started to diminish, especially as the former's songs comprised the vast majority of live setlists after 1980. In 1978, Tipton began to incorporate tapping into his playing, which Downing began to use as well. By 1990, both guitarists started to use the complex technique of sweep-picking, which can be notably heard on the title track of their 1990 album Painkiller. Both have continuously used these techniques ever since.

In Judas Priest's early years, Downing made common use of the wah-wah pedal (for instance, on Victim of Changes and Sinner), but began to limit his use of it in the late '70s, and had abandoned use of it by the mid-'80s, save for during live performances of the songs that originally featured it. The only time since then that he renewed use of it was in 1996, when vocalist Tim "Ripper" Owens joined the band, and they began to experiment with their music more than before. One of these experimentations was the renewal of wah-wah in Downing's playing, which can be heard on their 1997 album Jugulator. This experimentation was taken further on their next album with Owens, 2001's Demolition, but was once more abandoned when the band's former vocalist, Rob Halford, returned to the band. However, Downing used a wah-wah pedal on his last few tours with the band.
Downing officially left Judas Priest on 20 April 2011. An official press release was issued by the band. In an interview with online music publication, Guitarhoo!, Downing spoke on his leaving the band, "There had been an on-going breakdown in working relationships between myself, elements of the band and management for some time". Downing stated that there were at least "21 reasons" why he decided to quit but refused to go into specific detail about them.

The band continued with Richie Faulkner as Downing's replacement.

Happy Birthday MATTHIAS JABS (video)

#matthiasjabs #scorpions #rockfileradio
Matthias Jabs (born October 25, 1955) is a German guitarist and songwriter. He is one of the guitar players for the heavy metal band Scorpions.

Before joining the Scorpions, Jabs played for the bands Lady, Fargo and Deadlock. Jabs was hired to join the Scorpions upon the departure of guitarist Ulrich Roth in August 1978. Jabs was discovered by Francis Buchholz, who helped him learn mathematics. However Michael Schenker, younger brother of Scorpions rhythm guitarist/songwriter Rudolf Schenker had made the decision to leave his own band UFO, and expressed interest at re-joining the Scorpions as lead guitarist. Michael Schenker had already been a member of the Scorpions and left the band after the recording of their first album Lonesome Crow in 1972. As a result, Jabs was dismissed very shortly after joining the band.
However, Michael Schenker proved to be very unreliable during this time period and would frequently be absent from the band's live shows. This caused the Scorpions to contact Jabs at the last minute to fill in for Michael. After too many absences, Michael Schenker left and Jabs was permanently reinstated as lead guitarist for the Scorpions, which he has been ever since. This is why the Scorpions' 1979 album Lovedrive featured guitar tracks recorded by both Jabs and Michael Schenker. Jabs' playing style was a large part of Lovedrive's fresher, newer, heavier sound. This "Van Halen-like" sound would become the band's signature as it would propel them into superstardom in the 1980s. In the year 2000, he was awarded the city of Hanover plaque.

Glenn Tipton (born Glenn Raymond Tipton, 25 October 1947) is one of the Grammy Award-winning guitarists and is one of two guitar players for the heavy metal band Judas Priest.
Tipton is known for his complex, sometimes classically-influenced solos, and he has a unique guitar-playing technique. Many of his solos are very difficult to transcribe, and his playing is notable for his double lead guitar trades with fellow Judas Priest guitarist K.K. Downing. Tipton's solos have maintained a consistent style for most of his career, but he has continuously incorporated new techniques into his playing over the years as he has developed as a guitarist.

Happy Birthday TED TEMPLEMAN (links)

#tedtempleman #recordproducer #rockfileradio
Ted Templeman (born October 24, 1944, in Santa Cruz, California) is an American record producer. He began his career in the mid 1960s in the Santa Cruz area as a drummer in a band called The Tikis. At the suggestion of Lenny Waronker, the group decided to change their name. Harpers Bizarre was born in 1966, with Templeman switching to guitar and vocals. In 1967 the group released the album, Feelin' Groovy (Warner Bros.), which included some material by Randy Newman that later appeared on the songwriter's 1972 album Sail Away. Harpers Bizarre disbanded in 1970.

That same year, Templeman recorded what is now considered a cult classic. Using doubletracking, he appeared as "The Templeton Twins" backed by "Teddy Turner & his Bunsen Burners", recording contemporary hits of the time such as "Hey Jude" and "Light My Fire" in a pseudo-1920s style.

Much of his work has been done collaborating with recording engineer Donn Landee at Sunset Studios in Hollywood, California. In 1970 Templeman (at the suggestion of Waronker) began working as an Engineer for Warner Bros. Records. That year he produced the unheralded eponymous The Doobie Brothers debut album, followed the next year by the Doobies' Toulouse Street album which achieved platinum record status on the strength of the hit single "Listen to the Music". Templeman continued a long professional relationship with The Doobie Brothers, producing many more hit singles and albums for the group.
In 1973 Templeman produced another classic and eponymous album, Montrose, which was released in November of that year. The group was founded by guitarist and group leader Ronnie Montrose (who had worked with singers such as Van Morrison and Edgar Winter), and an up and coming singer, Sammy Hagar, who brought songs like 'Bad Motor Scooter' and 'Make It Last' to the guitarist.

In 1976 he produced Carly Simon's sixth studio album, Another Passenger, for which he arranged both the Doobie Brothers and Little Feat to serve as Simon's backing band. The album was not as commercially oriented as her previous work with producer Richard Perry, and its first single, a cover of the Doobies' "It Keeps You Runnin'", did not quite crack the Top 40. However, the album received critical praise and many of its songs received airplay on album-oriented FM radio stations.

In 1977 Templeman saw a performance of a relatively unknown group, Van Halen. He convinced Mo Ostin, Warner Bros. Chairman, to sign the group to the label, and Templeman produced their eponymous first album. The group utilized Templeman's production talents through their first six albums and established themselves as one of the world's biggest-selling acts of the late 1970s and early 1980s. He is also the voice that pleads "Come on Dave, gimme a break!" in the song "Unchained", to which Dave (David Lee Roth) replies "One break, coming up!". Templeman also produced the first two solo projects of Van Halen singer David Lee Roth: Crazy from the Heat and Eat 'Em and Smile, the latter being the first album Roth recorded after he left Van Halen.
Other artists produced by Templeman include:- Van Morrison (Tupelo Honey, Saint Dominic's Preview, It's Too Late to Stop Now); Captain Beefheart (Clear Spot); Little Feat (Sailin' Shoes); Michael McDonald (If That's What It Takes); Aerosmith (Done with Mirrors); and Eric Clapton (Behind the Sun); Buddy Tyler.

Since the late 1980s Templeman has worked more sporadically. Recently he has produced two albums by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and in 2008 he worked with the Doobie Brothers again on a new album.

Instead of posting videos, here is a list of albums he worked on....go listen to them.
